How to Lead Restorative Conversations at Home

How families can slow down the conversation and listen to one another.

It's easier than you think!

Your Restorative Family Mediator has been showing you a new way to have conversations. Now it's your turn!

Parents can act neutral and use the process at home to continue essential discussions, such as school attendance with youth, aggressive behaviors that are being worked on, and more. Once you get the hang of it - it becomes a handy tool when:

  • Imagine the relief when a young child has a meltdown at Target or the grocery store. Head back to the car and facilitate this process so everyone can focus and regroup, feeling reassured and in control.

  • What about when a teenager wants to go toe to toe about a household rule. Facilitate this process and listen to one another by slowing down a heated debate.

  • When you find regular ways to engage your kids and hear how school is going or friends are doing, you'll feel a sense of relief without feeling like you have to pelt them with questions - the process naturally opens up dialogue! Facilitate this at lunch on a Saturday or throw down a pizza in the living room on Friday night to stay connected. What else comes to mind for you?

The Circle Guide offers a simple set of instructions to get yourself started. This process becomes more familiar the more you try it. It's like playing a Monopoly game—the first few times, you'll need to pull out the instructions, but soon, you'll be on your way!

Can you help me navigate co-parenting, divorce, or post decree family issues?

*The Restore Life Center primarily focuses on restoring and strengthening family relationships. We do not conduct family mediations for divorce or post-decree matters.

We invite you to check out our trusted partners (trained in our process) to help meet those needs.
