CULTURAL RESPONSIVENESS
Family & Youth Centered Support

Our mediators and conflict coaches have been intentionally hand selected not only for their credentials, but for their ability to facilitate meaningful and culturally relevant conversations. This includes knowing how to ask the right questions—questions that are developmentally appropriate, context-aware, and aligned to the family’s cultural background, lived experience, and current season of need. We believe that the neutral asking quality questions in a session can significantly shape the safety, trust, and outcomes for the family. Families regularly provide feedback, after services, that they received customized support that matched their situation and needs of all coming to the table in a nonjudgemental way.

Why is this important? As an approved conflict resolution trainer and practicing office, we uphold the Minnesota Court Rule 114 governing alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes which are deeply rooted in the principles of party self-determination, free will, values articulated by the parties, and procedural autonomy.
We serve families across a wide range of backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ youth and families, and are intentional about creating respectful, affirming, and non-judgmental spaces where honest communication and relational repair can take place. Here's a snapshot of our investment to be culturally responsive:

Diverse and Representative Professional Team
Our multidisciplinary team reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and brings both professional expertise and lived experience into family conflict resolution. This allows us to respond effectively to complex family dynamics across age, culture, race, faith, identity, and life circumstance.

Immigrant & First-Generation Family Support
We include professionals with first-generation lived experience who support immigrant and first-generation families navigating intergenerational conflict, cultural adjustment, parenting expectations, identity development, and the unique complexities of raising children in the United States.

Racial & Ethnic Representation
The Katallasso Group includes BIPOC mediators who bring cultural awareness, shared lived experience, and culturally grounded approaches to mediation—supporting families from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.
We also provide mediators with knowledge of Indigenous perspectives, community values, and historical trauma, offering culturally informed support when appropriate.

Youth & Young Adult Engagement
Our team includes youth-centered practitioners—including a young adult mediator and social worker—who specialize in working with teens and young adults. This allows us to provide developmentally appropriate support, peer-proximate engagement, and practical conflict resolution strategies that resonate with youth.

LGBTQ+ Youth & Family Support
When youth are navigating identity development, belonging, safety, and acceptance—especially within systems such as school, court, or social services - we are ready to engage. Our restorative approach prioritizes dignity, respectful dialogue, and relational repair. Our services create a safe space for youth and caregivers to communicate honestly, reduce polarization, work collaboratively and build shared understanding while strengthening family connection.

Spiritually-Responsive Support
Our neutral services are provided in a faith-sensitive, non-coercive manner that respects each individual’s belief system. Just like any other culturally relevant topic, we work diligently to assign the right neutral and also connect families with the most helpful resources and supports while encouraging a safe, balanced and productive conversation built on values everyone coming to the table can agree to.

Lived Experience & Complex Family Systems
Our team includes professionals with lived experience in:
-
Divorce and high-conflict co-parenting
-
Blended families
-
Adoption and foster care systems
-
Substance use disorder, addiction, and recovery (including family impact and relapse cycles)
-
Grandparent rights, third-party custody, and related legal complexities
-
Power/control dynamics and domestic violence in family systems

This lived experience enhances empathy, credibility, and practical problem-solving for families navigating similar challenges.

Medically & Clinically Informed Support
We also offer mediators with medical backgrounds who support families navigating conflict related to chronic illness, disability, medically complex caregiving needs, and family stress related to health concerns.

Our team includes a trauma therapist to support the integration of trauma-informed practices in mediation and coaching, ensuring services remain grounded, safe, and respectful for families impacted by adverse childhood experiences, domestic stressors, or system involvement.

Commitment to Equity and Access
The Katallasso Group prioritizes equitable access by intentionally aligning families with mediators who reflect or understand their cultural background, identity, life experiences, communication style, and service needs. This approach increases engagement, reduces service drop-off, and supports outcomes that are sustainable, respectful, and family-driven.

Our culturally responsive staffing model positions The Katallasso Group as a trusted partner for counties and government agencies seeking effective, inclusive, community-rooted mediation and conflict resolution services.
