Differentiation of self is a cornerstone of Bowen's Family Systems Theory.[1] Bowen’s theory emerged in the mid-1950s in psychotherapy to explain families as systems.[2] The Bowen's Family Systems Theory perspective has provided language and an understanding of the interlocking nature of family relationships, similar to a natural systems approach in cellular biology.[3] Seven other foundational concepts center around the primary concept of DoS and other researchers and practitioners within the field, having studied underneath Murray Bowen, have expounded on his groundbreaking work with ties to leadership in families and broader society.
